# Details on results calculation

In performance review processes, the results are calculated in different ways depending on which aspects were assessed in the first place. You will learn more about it in this article.

## Calculating the results of a competency per review category

The average of a competency corresponds to the simple average of the results of the behaviors that compose it. This result is given by each review category in which the competency was assessed. For example, if self-reviews are part of the process, we will have results for the assessed competency in the self-review category and also in the manager review category.

In the following example, the calculation of the competency called Decision Making for the manager review category corresponds to the simple average of its two associated behaviors:

• Competency: Decision Making (3.5 pts.)
• Behavior 1: Considers all of the options and weighs their pros and cons before making a choice. (4 pts.)
• Behavior 2: Analyzes options systematically and chooses the best course of action based on logic and evidence. (3 pts.)

(4+3) / 2 = 3.5 pts.

If the assessed employee has different reviewers for the same category, the platform will calculate the simple average of every result of the behavior of each reviewer first, and then calculate the simple average between every behavior to get the result for the competency assessed.

## Calculating the final average of a competency

The final average of a competency corresponds to the average of the result of every competency for each weighted category multiplied by the weight of the category.

Following the previous example, the result of the manager review category of the employee has a weight of 90% of the final average and her self-review result has a weight of 10%. In this case, the calculation of the result of the Decision Making competency will be as follows:

• Competency: Decision Making (3.4 pts.)
• Manager review: 3.5 pts.
• Self-review: 2.5 pts.

3.5 x 0.9 + 2.5 x 0.1 = 3.4 pts.

It's important to note that every employee can have different weights for each of their review categories.

## Calculating the average of all competencies

You can configure your process to assign different weights to each competency in the final average of all competencies. These weights can be different for each family of competencies and for each category, so how the platform will calculate the average of all competencies will be different for each process.

## Calculating the average of goals

The average of goals is calculated according to the weights of each goal and objective for each employee.

## Calculating the final average of an assessment

The calculation of the final average of an assessment can be different and depends on how many domains the process is assessing and an which results the company wants to obtain from these assessments.

• Calculating the final average of a domain: The results can be shown as a value (in percentage or points) or as a position in a nine-box. The final average can be obtained from the following components: competencies, goals and self-reviews. Using our past example, it can go as follows:
• Final average of Performance: 3.3 pts.
• Final average of competencies (60%): 3.5 pts.
• Final average of goals (40%): 3.2 pts.

3.5*0.6 + 3.2*0.4  = 3.3 pts.

• Calculating the final average of all domains: The final average of an assessment can be composed of the final averages of every domain, each with their corresponding weight. For example, we can average the Performance domain with the Potential domain and obtain the final result of an assessment. The results can be shown as a value (in percentage or in points) or a position in a nine-box.
